The Process: The process of Navarakkizhi involves a sweat inducing massage done with a concoction of cow’s milk and Shasti rice and herbs, which is then packed in boluses. These boluses are rubbed on the afflicted body parts or the whole body to provide heat for pain relief and nutrition and strength to the depleting tissues and muscles. Typically eight boluses are formed and continuously dipped in medicated milk which is kept warm over a stove. These boluses are cyclically handed over to the masseurs by helpers as soon as they lose the desired warmth. The process continues till sweating occurs. The four masseurs, two on either side rhythmically and in sync carry out the massage, as they make the receiver assume seven different postures.
Duration: The number of days the treatment is recommended for depends on the intensity of the ailment. It may typically vary between 7 to 21 days. The duration of one session varies from 70 to 105 minutes depending on the requirement and as determined by the specialists.
