The Process: An integral part of the Panchkarma therapy, Vasthi involves broadly two processes. While the first requires channelizing of warm medicated decoctions and oils placed on the affected areas of the body, the second process can be termed as medicated enema that effectively flushes out the accumulated toxins.

The first process can further be categorized as Kativasthi (Lower Back Vasthi), Greevavasthi (Neck Vasthi), Urovasthi (Chest Vasthi) and Shirovasthi (Head Vasthi). The medicated enemas are two types; the Kashayavasthi(Herbal Decoction Enema) and Snehavasthi(Herbal Decoction Enema).

Kativasthi (Lower Back Vasthi):

The process involves making a pit from the paste or dough made of black gram flour on the lower back. This pit is then filled with a warm decoction made from herbs and oils. The warm oil penetrates the skin onto the vertebrae, which in turn strengthens the muscle, bones, ligaments and tendons as it lubricates and cleanses.

  • Sciatica
  • Slip Disc
Greevavasthi (Neck Vasthi):

The process is similar to the above except this time the warm oil decoction is placed on the neck. Deep penetration of the medicated and herb rich oil strengthens the neck muscles and lubricates the cervical vertebrae. This therapy ensures both flexibility as well as freedom from pain.

  • Stiff Neck
  • Neck Pain
  • Upper Back Ache
Shirovasthi (Head Vasthi):

The Shirovasthi or the head Vasthi requires a leak proof leather hat like container to be placed on the head of the receiver. This in turn is filled with the recommended warm special herbal oil which is retained during the entire duration of the process.

  • Neurological Condition
  • Facial Paralysis
  • Insomnia
  • Depression
Urovasthi (Chest Vasthi):

Warm medicated oil is placed in a pit on the chest of the receiver. The medicated oil permeates the skin and activates the muscles and connective tissues thereby increasing blood circulation. The oil is continuously recycled to maintain the temperature to maximize effect.

Duration: The duration of each session for each of the above listed variants of Vasthi varies between 45 to 60 minutes and can last anywhere between 7 to 21 days based on the recommendation by specialists.

Kashayavasthi (Herbal Decoction Enema):

This enema is composed of decoctions, honey, oils, salt and other prescribed herbal medicines. Helps to flush out toxins and the Vata disorders. It helps to maintain a healthy state by balancing the three Doshas of Vata, Pita n Kapha.

Snehavasthi (Herbal Decoction Enema):

This is a totally oil based enema which aims to lubricate the colon. Medicated oil is introduced in the body and flushed out after a specified retention period. Aids in curing Vata disorders.

Duration: The time duration may vary from person to person. The treatment itself may last for a minimum of 5 days and may continue up to 25 days as the need may be.
